During his studies, he learned perhaps most of all from TV director Gijs Stappershoef (1920–2010), who taught interview training classes at the time.
During those years, he contributed to a publication by the Academy of Architecture in Amsterdam, amongst other things. He also worked briefly at STAD Radio Amsterdam.

After Utrecht, Flip studied law at the University of Amsterdam for several years.
An invitation to work and live in England for a year led to side jobs at The Independent newspaper, which had been founded a few years earlier, and The Image photography magazine. It was at the latter that he developed a passion for photography.
During that year, he also became acquainted with the internet (e.g. forums on CompuServe), which was still in its infancy as a communication channel at the time.

Back in the Netherlands, he worked as a correspondent for British and European clients.
